Padma Shri Prof. Deepak Phatak Honored by IIT Bombay Alumni

A report by the EC committee New York Chapter
New York, NY: Friday, February 1, 2013

Plaque

About 50 alumni of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, met on Friday, February 1, 2013 at a Manhattan restaurant to felicitate and honor Prof. Deepak Phatak upon whom was conferred the Padma Shree award for 2013 for fostering science and engineering by the President of India. Prof. Phatak is the Subrao Nilekani Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Prof. Phatak regaled the audience, some of them contemporaries of his from his graduate student days at IITB with his recent experiences heading the Aakash tablet computer project, including demonstrations of Aakash remotely controlling a tabletop robot.

The initiative that resonated the most with the alumni was the Center for Distance Engineering Education. This National Mission interactive distance learning initiative, pioneered by Prof. Phatak, has already trained 20,000 teachers in core engineering subjects, and is well on its way to training a total of 150,000 teachers. This will empower thousands of teachers for more effective teaching of technology subjects using a blended mode of training and by developing open source knowledge contents. This is seen as a key step in upgrading the engineering education at colleges in secondary cities. No wonder that Prof. Phatak was listed amongst the fifty most influential Indians by Business week in 2009.

He started an IT business incubator to foster innovation. His Affordable Solutions Lab has developed several low cost technology solutions including clicker devices and interactive e-learning tools. He has been an Open Source evangelist in India and his dream is to see a resurgent India catching up with the world using IT as the spring board.

A note on New York Chapter:

IIT Bombay AA Greater New York Chapter was the FIRST IITB AA Chapter anywhere in the world to honor Prof. Phatak. We are probably the most active chapter anywhere in the world and organize and conduct  a host of successful events each year.

In addition, NY chapter collects more funds for IIT Bombay than any other chapters.

I am happy to announce that the newly elected team is taking charge of GNY chapter for 2013-2014 term. We are fortunate to have

President - Ram Chelluri

Vice President & Secretary - Sushil Bhatia

Treasurer - Subodh Batra
Trustees (2) - Ruyintan (Ron) Mehta & Gaurang Master

Having worked with the individuals in new team over the past few years, I am excited to say that we have a strong team of roll-up-your-sleeves doers and look forward to their leadership. As many of you already know, with more than 800 members and many dedicated volunteers, the New York chapter (IITBAA-GNY) is one of the most vibrant and dynamic alumni association.

Our chapter is proud of a unique initiative in 2012. Thanks to your generosity, on Oct 27, 2012 with matching contributions of $10K each from Ron Mehta, Anil Diwan and GNY chapter, we created 8 scholarships to support needy students at IIT Bombay. This is perhaps the first time any IIT chapter has achieved this. These are fully endowed perpetual undergraduate scholarships where the interest on the principal is used for scholarships that last forever. If one of you wants to do this, the endowment is only US$5,000.

Our alumni association was created with alumni services in mind.  Thank you very much for your generous support of our chapter and its activities. As always, we look forward to your feedback.

On behalf of our volunteer team, we wish you and your family a Happy Holiday Season and Prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,

Vinay Karle,

On behalf of the new IITBAA-GNY committee and  volunteer Team
